A very sad story was just reported on one of the local television shows from a father's perspective about a nurse stealing pain killing drugs from his recently deceased daughter, a 28 year old melonoma patient.
That is the very sad part. The shocking part is who regulates that industry... DORA! The same regulatory agency that governs mortgage lenders and real estate agents! Ok, are you sitting down??? THERE IS NO REQUIREMENT FOR BACKGROUND CHECKS FOR NURSES!! Why? They say because of the expense???
WHOA... as professional lenders, it was legislated that we had to pay the expense for a background check if we wanted to be licensed. Yet, the same is not expected of a professional who is responsible for our lives???
Is it me, or is something a little strange here???

Ruth,
There is something very wrong there. The expense? What is the expense of a lost loved one?
There you go, another provision for the health care bill. It should only add another 50 pages or so.
And that was precisely the point of the report. This father is outraged!
Must be a CO state thing because I know here nurses get background checks, I had one done in just applying for the program.
Amazing....Because I am a mortgage broker the banks run my credit and put me thru a ringer every year and why? Seems we miss the boat and focus in the wrong areas.
I am sure it is a state issue, Heather.
I agree, Doug, we miss the big picture all too often. (And with national licensing on the horizon for lenders, why not for nursing???) Still in shock about this!
That does seem wrong. Nurses are in a position of responsibilty as well.
